Jews are a tribe as well as a religion. So you can be a Jew (tribal affiliation) and not a Jew (religious affiliation). You can also convert into the religion and be religiously Jewish but not ethnically Jewish.

Jewish Atheists are a pretty illustrious club that includes Richard Feynman, Karl Marx, Stephen Fry, Isaac Asimov, and me.

I have a good friend who's a Jewish Atheist. I know it's not a true ethnicity, but I occasionally consider myself a Mormon Atheist; since both sides of my family are Mormon at least three generations deep, predominately Utah natives, and one side includes the original pioneers.

Not that I agree with even the concept of what Mormons do or have done, but I cannot deny that they're my ancestors.

Hey, I doubt many of us are proud of all the things that those of our ancestors' tribes have done. Whether it's genociding the First Nations of America or the Jews of Europe, American and European enslavement of Africans, massacring the Cathars in France, killing and removing the foreskins of countless desert tribes in the fertile crescent, killing off the Ainu, marginalizing the Australian Aborigines, suicide bombing, raping and pillaging across Ireland and Scotland, causing famine by sending millions of smart or hard working peasants to forced labor camps, burning women at stakes, or even being Mormon.
